Insulation projects fall into one of two categories. Each project is either part of a new construction or it is a retrofit. To retrofit a home is to add something to it after it has been built. Retrofit insulation is any insulation added after its construction was complete. A retrofit is necessary when things the home’s original insulation is not enough.

Should You Reinsulate?

You should consider retrofitting your home, especially if it was built before 1960. New homes today are subject to the Canadian building code, but it wasn’t always so. The Canadian government instituted the first code in 1941, but it took a while to catch on. Here in Saskatchewan, we adopted the latest fire code in 2018 and the energy efficiency code in 2019. These codes show that the old methods were not good enough. Your home insulation may not be good enough! Below are some signals that your home may need to be reinsulated.

  • There is mold on your walls
  • Your house has uneven heat
  • Your walls are cold and drafty
  • Your furnace or air conditioner has difficulty controlling the temperature
  • Your SaskEnergy and/or SaskPower bills are higher than they should be

Don’t know the age of your home? There are inexpensive ways to find out if you need improved insulation. One method is to place your hand on an exterior wall on a cold day. The wall shouldn’t feel cold. Repeat that test throughout the house and take notes. You could walk around the house with bare legs and see if you feel any drafts. We can help with our thermal imaging camera. It shows us temperature differences in such a way that we can diagnose the problem and suggest a fix.
